If we rest in God, he will work all for good. God caused deep sleep to fall on Adam; while he knows no sin, God will take care that he shall feel no pain. God, as her Father, brought the woman to the man, as his second self, and a help meet for him. That wife, who is of God’s making by special grace, and of God’s bringing by special providence, is likely to prove a help meet for a man. See what their need is, both of prudence and prayer in the choice of this relation, which is so near and so lasting.
Matthew 19:6 KJV
Wherefore they are no more twain, but one flesh. What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder.
When the gospel is really embraced, it makes men kind relatives and faithful friends; it teaches them to bear the burdens, and to bear with the infirmities of those with whom they are connected, to consider their peace and happiness more than their own. As to ungodly persons, it is proper that they should be restrained by laws, from breaking the peace of society. And we learn that the married state should be entered upon with great seriousness and earnest prayer.
There will be failures and defects on both sides, in the present state of human nature, yet this does not alter the relation. All the duties of marriage are included in unity and love. And while we adore and rejoice in the condescending love of Christ, let husbands and wives learn hence their duties to each other. Thus, the worst evils would be prevented, and many painful effects would be avoided.
What the scripture states goes directly against society’s mindset for women and marriage. In Ephesians 5:22-23, we learn some of the duties of marriage.
The duty of wives is submission to their husbands in the Lord, which includes honouring and obeying them, from a principle of love to them. The duty of husbands is to love their wives. The love of Christ for the church is an example which is sincere, pure, and constant, notwithstanding her failures.
Christ gave himself for the church, that he might sanctify it in this world, and glorify it in the next, that he might bestow on all his members a principle of holiness, and deliver them from the guilt, the pollution, and the dominion of sin, by those influences of the Holy Spirit, of which baptismal water was the outward sign. The church and believers will not be without spot or wrinkle till they come to glory. But those only who are sanctified now, shall be glorified hereafter.
As Christ did the will, and sought the honour of God, so the Christian should avow his subjection to Christ, doing his will and seeking his glory. We should, even in our dress and habit, avoid every thing that may dishonour Christ. The woman was made subject to man, because made for his help and comfort. And she should do nothing, in Christian assemblies, which looked like a claim of being equal.
She ought to have “power,” that is, a veil, on her head, because of the angels. Their presence should keep Christians from all that is wrong while in the worship of God. Nevertheless, the man and the woman were made for one another. They were to be mutual comforts and blessings, not one a slave and the other a tyrant. God has so settled matters, both in the kingdom of providence and that of grace, that the authority and subjection of each party should be for mutual help and benefit. It was the common usage of the churches for women to appear in public assemblies and join in public worship, veiled, and it was right that they should do so. The Christian religion sanctions national customs wherever these are not against the great principles of truth and holiness; affected singularities receive no countenance from anything in the Bible.
But good women may and ought to teach their children at home the principles of true religion. Also, women must not think themselves excused from learning what is necessary to salvation, though they must not usurp authority. As a woman was last in the creation, which is one reason for her subjection, so she was first in the transgression. But there is a word of comfort; that those who continue in sobriety shall be saved in child-bearing, or with child-bearing, by the Messiah, who was born of a woman. And the especial sorrow to which the female sex is subject should cause men to exercise their authority with much gentleness, tenderness, and affection.
What we gather as knowledge through our journey unto eternity as the bride to be is found in our hearts as the oil for our lamps when our Lord calls. Matthew 25:6-7 KJV
And at midnight there a cry made, Behold, the bridegroom cometh; go ye out to meet him. Then all those virgins arose, and trimmed their lamps.
How we conduct ourselves in our worldly marriages is part of the oil we gather and store for our lamps to light our Lord’s way when he appears as our bridegroom.
Matthew 25:10 KJV
And while they went to buy, the bridegroom came; and they that were ready went in with him to the marriage: and the door was shut.
As Christians, we profess to attend upon Christ, to honor him, and also to be waiting for his coming. Sincere Christians are the wise virgins and hypocrites the foolish ones. Those are truly wise or foolish that are so in the affairs of their souls.
Many have a lamp of profession in their hands, but have not, in their hearts, sound knowledge and settled resolution, which are needed to carry them through the services and trials of the present state. Their hearts are not stored with holy dispositions by the new-creating Spirit of God.
Our light must shine before men in good works; but this is not likely to be long done, unless there is a fixed, active principle in the heart, of faith in Christ, and love to God and our brethren.
They all slumbered and slept. The delay represents the space between the real or apparent conversion of these professors and the coming of Christ, to take them away by death, or to judge the world. But though Christ tarry past our time, he will not tarry past the due time.
The wise virgins kept their lamps burning, but they did not keep themselves awake. Too many real Christians grow remiss, and one degree of carelessness makes way for another. Those that allow will scarcely keep from sleeping; therefore, dread the beginning of spiritual decays. A startling summons was given. Go ye forth to meet Him, is a call to those prepared.
