“Jesus also gave them this illustration: “Can one blind person lead another? Won’t both fall into the same pit? [40] A student is no better than his teacher. But everyone who is well-trained will be like his teacher.” Luke 6:39-40
OPENING STATEMENT by Robert
Again, Yeshua condemns pride, as being a direct contravention of His Law of Love. Love rejoices in the possessions and gifts of others, nor would Pride care to add to its own if it must be at the cost of theirs. Love is an equalizer. Levelling up the inequalities the accidents life have made, and preferring to stand on some lower level with its fellows than to sit solitary on some lofty and cold mountain. Pride, on the other hand, is a repelling, separating force.
Scorning those who occupy the lower places, pride is contented only on its Olympian Summit, where it keeps warm with the fires of self-adulation. The proud heart is the loveless heart, one huge inflation. If pride carries others at all, it is only as a steadying ballast. Self-regard will not hesitate to throw them over and throw them down, as mere dust or sand, if the fall will help the person to rise. Pride builds a nest high up, bringing forth whole broods of loveless, preying passions, hatreds, jealousies, and hypocrisies. Arrogance sees no brotherhood in man; humanity to pride means no more than so many serfs to wait upon its pleasure or so many victims for its sacrifice! And how Yeshua loved to prick these bubbles of airy nothings, showing up these vanities as the very essence of selfishness!
In Proverbs 18:17, we find a solid piece of advice from King Solomon: It is well to listen to our enemies, that we may form a better judgment of ourselves.
But,” say many people amongst us, “we put our faith in the Lord Jesus Christ; we trust Him; why should you impose any further conditions?” Do they put their faith in Him? Does not belief imply obedience? Did He not require His disciples to be united in a fellowship. And did He not give His body and His blood as a symbol of this fellowship, and command them to take the symbols in remembrance of Him until He comes? Are these isolated believers obeying Him, or are they not cutting at the root of His glorious purpose of human fellowship in the Divine Head? And if they are thus breaking His expressed commandment. Has Yeshua not warned them that he will say, “I never knew you. Depart from Me” although they have taught in his name, and even cast out devils and done many wonderful works?
He that separates himself follows after his own desire, but against all sound wisdom he shows his teeth”– Proverbs 18:1
Separation from the value of friendship, there is a natural and smooth transition to the evil of isolation. We must try to fathom the profound meaning which is hidden under this striking but straightforward proverb. To begin with, what are we to understand by “one that separates himself“? This same word occurs in 2 Samuel 1:23 concerning Saul and Jonathan, that “in their death, they were not separated” Theirs was a togetherness that accompanied them to the grave.
On the other hand, some people shun all togetherness in their lives. They are voluntarily, deliberately separated from their kind, and they seem for the first time to blend with their fellows. When their undistinguished dust mixes with the dust of others in the common grave.
We are to think of a person who has no ties with any of his fellow-beings. Who has broken such links as bound him to them or is of that morbid and unnatural humour that makes all interaction with others distasteful? We are to think more, especially of one who chooses this life of solitariness to follow out his own desire. Rather than from any necessity of circumstance or disposition. One who finds his pleasure in ignoring mankind, and wishes for interaction with them only that he may vent his spleen against them. In a word, we are to think of a skeptic.
The skeptic is one who has no faith in his fellows and shrinks into himself to escape them who pursues his own private ends. Avoiding all unnecessary speech with those who are around him, living alone, dying unobserved, except for the mischief which, consciously or unconsciously, he does to those who survive him. Such a one is aptly described as showing his teeth in an angry snarl against all the approaches.
Here begins a discourse of Yeshua, most of which is also found in Matthew 5 and 7. All believers that take the precepts of the gospel to themselves, and live by them, may take the promises of the gospel to themselves, and live upon them. Woes are denounced against prosperous sinners as miserable people, though the world envies them. Those are blessed indeed whom Christ blesses, but those must be dreadfully miserable who fall under his woe and curse! What a vast advantage will the saint have over the sinner in the other world! and what a wide difference will there be in their rewards, how much soever the sinner may prosper, and the saint is afflicted here!
“Yeshua condemns pride, as being a direct contravention of His Law of Love.”
The Holy Spirit has shown and defined for me so I might better know how to apply God’s love in certain circumstances and situations. “ God’s Love given as a gift to His children is a suave which can be used to heal the wounds of the soul and human spirit. Thus the instruction of how and when to use it effectively when applying this precious gift and when so it is most effective. “Each tree is known by its fruit. You don’t pick figs from thorny plants or grapes from a thornbush. [45] Good people do the good that is in them. But evil people do the evil that is in them. The things people say come from inside them.” Luke 6:44-45 check out the following link.
